Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your work?
I'm Kerrie and I live in Geelong (or the City of Dreams as I like to call it), with my Husband and 2 kids. l am a self taught artist who likes to create works primarily using acrylic paints but often can't help sneaking in other mediums like pastels or poscas in as well. Over the last couple of years I've also been working with Alcohol Inks on yupo paper which I like the drama of, especially when I go big on a piece. They are incredibly different mediums but that works for me as I definitely like keeping my artwork varied and enjoy doing different things depending on my mood (I'm a Cancerian so they can certainly vary!)
How would you sum up your work in 3 words?
Bright, joyful, colourful.
What do you use for inspiration behind your work?
I like to think about what I want to spend time looking at on my walls and I'm a big fan of the beauty and the shapes in nature, so a lot of my work has plants or floral component as the base. I do however let loose a little on the colours! Having balance in an artwork is essential. I think most people would be surprised how much thought goes into this, even on what might appear a more simple work (which is often the hardest to achieve it in!) I think it's this balance that helps people feel calm and the colours and shapes that can convey more emotions like happiness, excitement or fun.
What is your advice for those who are just starting out?
I have been incredibly lucky with support from companies like Jade and May who are interested in established but also emerging artists and creators, but I am still such a fledgling newbie artist who is looking to commit to devoting more time to creating, but I wouldn't know where to start with advice! I guess the only thing I'd say is if you enjoy it, go for it! How does the saying go? Paint is only wasted when it stays in the tube!
