Spotlight on the Rutland Street Precinct: We Made Art Studio

Spotlight on the Rutland Street Precinct: We Made Art Studio

We here at Jade and May LOVE being nestled in the Rutland Street Precinct in the historic RS & S Woollen Mills in Newtown, Geelong.

And even better than our beautiful location on the Barwon River, is the fact that we are sat amongst some of the BEST people and businesses we know. There are an absolute tonne of talented creatives, makers and so (so!) much more tucked down the river end of Pakington St in Newtown and we'd love to introduce them to you, so you can get to know them, too

We-Made Art Studio, run by the effervescent Jess Johns, full of positivity and banter this is the person you want teaching your kids some new art techniques.  Located across our mini carpark in a shared space with Rebecchi's Cafe, Rut Gallery and Bad Neighbour Records it's a fun, inviting and colour space that your mini's will love to visit

Jess, give us the elevator pitch?  What’s your business, where are you located and who are you?
e Made is located at 11 Rutland St (through Rebecchi's). We run a range of art classes that work to empower individuals through art. We are all about celebrating unique ideas & having a go. While we specialise in kids (age 5-15) classes, we also host adult & preschool classes as well as hosting Paint + Sip events & kids birthday parties.

What’s the best part of your job?
I love seeing the progress in students confidence & watching them find a way to express themselves and back their own ideas. So many children leave with more confidence not only in their art but their social & emotional skills too.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I really didn't have any idea. When I finished school I was accepted into a bachelor of visual arts but ultimately decided to travel and work in schools. I ended up completely half a teaching degree when I returned & spent 8 years working in different schools up until last year, when I was working as a wellbeing coordinator

How would you sum up where you work in 3 words?
Empowering, Fun & (a little) Chaotic

What is your advice for those who are just starting out?
Just go for it. Don't overthink it or wait until it's perfect!

What’s your favourite product/ service in-store at the moment?
Our Home Decor craft class is so much fun! So many cool projects from   polymer clay photoholders to paper flowers!

Tell us something about you that we don’t know?
