Calm Balm for Busy Mums | Finding Small Moments of Calm

Every time I visit our makers, I'm reminded that people make time for the things that matter. Everyone stops for lunch together. They sit in the courtyard, chat about their families and laugh over ice blocks before heading home for the day. In the evenings, families gather on the beach to watch the sun go down instead of rushing from one thing to the next.

Then I come home, and within a week I'm back to answering emails while making lunch, thinking about tomorrow before today is even finished.

I don't imagine I'm the only one.

Whether you're running a business, raising children or simply trying to keep on top of everyday life, it's easy to convince yourself that you'll slow down once everything is done. The problem is that there's almost always another load of washing, another appointment to remember or another email waiting for an answer.

I've realised that waiting for life to become less busy isn't a very good plan.

The Small Things Often Make the Biggest Difference

These days, I don't look for whole afternoons to myself because they rarely appear. Instead, I've started noticing the small pockets of time that were always there.

The first coffee before anyone else is awake feels different when I'm not scrolling through emails at the same time. Changing into my current favourite pair of linen pyjamas after dinner has become a signal that work is finished, even if the dishes are still sitting in the sink. Reading a few pages of a book before bed helps my mind slow down in a way that another twenty minutes on my phone never seems to.

None of these things take very long, but together they've changed the way my evenings feel.

Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be Another Job

Somewhere along the way, self-care became something else we were expected to do well.

There's always another morning routine to follow, another habit to build or another list of things we're apparently supposed to fit into an already full day.

I think we've made it much more complicated than it needs to be.

Sometimes looking after yourself is simply opening the back door while you drink your tea. Sometimes it's sitting in the sun for five minutes before everyone else wakes up. Sometimes it's choosing an early night instead of folding the washing that can quite happily wait until tomorrow.

Those are the rituals that tend to stay with us because they fit naturally into everyday life.

Why We Created Calm Balm

When we started working on Calm Balm, we weren't trying to create something that promised to change your life. We wanted to make something that could become part of those ordinary moments that already exist.

It's the little tin you keep beside your bed and reach for before you turn the light out. It's the one that lives in your handbag for long travel days or in your desk drawer for those afternoons when your shoulders have somehow ended up around your ears.

Made with botanical ingredients and calming essential oils, it's designed to be used often rather than saved for special occasions. Like so many things at Jade and May, it's about making everyday life feel just a little nicer.

Maybe Slowing Down Looks Different Than We Think

I don't think slowing down necessarily means doing less.

Sometimes it's doing exactly what you were already going to do, but allowing yourself to be present while you're doing it.

Making a cup of tea and actually sitting down to drink it. Opening the windows while you make the bed. Walking barefoot through the grass to bring the washing in.

Or applying a little Calm Balm before climbing into bed at the end the day.

Life probably won't stop being busy. But I've found that paying attention to those small moments makes the busy days feel a little less rushed, and somehow that's enough.
